چکیده

Traditional 3D modeling systems are commonly intended for designing complicated and exact objects, but they are not always suitable for quick design of freeform shapes. It is because these systems are highly complex and user has to follow a long and tedious learning process before being able to create meaningful models. For these reasons, in recent years there have been many efforts in developing more intuitive interfaces for interactive and quick design. Because sketching is very natural process for most people and makes the design process faster and more intuitive, it become popular to design 3D freeform shapes just form 2D sketches, drawn by user. In this paper we present such a system for modeling 3D shapes from sketched silhouette curves. Our approach uses convolution surfaces with linear weight distribution as a geometrical representation. This convolution surface model allows modeling complex and smooth objects with arbitrary genus including objects with semi-sharp features or holes. With our system the user can easily create variety of shapes only by sketching silhouette curves on different projection planes. Additional modeling operations such as smooth merging of components, carving or texturing are also included. Also first-time users including small children manage this system very well and can create interesting models within minutes.

Prototype Modeling from Sketched Silhouettes based on Convolution Surfaces

This paper presents a hybrid method for creating three-dimensional shapes by sketching silhouette curves. Given a silhouette curve, we approximate its medial axis as a set of line segments, and convolve a linearly weighted kernel along each segment. By summing the fields of all segments, an analytical convolution surface is obtained. The resulting generic shape has circular cross-section, but c...

Guided Trace and Stitch Modeling Using Multimodal Interaction

Freeform modeling is an integral part of the geometric modeling and design process. Existing freeform modeling systems expect the user to be familiar with the geometric representation and user interface in order to model precisely and rapidly. As a result, modeling complex freeform geometries precisely and rapidly can be quite difficult. In this thesis, we address the problems manifested in cur...

Freeform extrusion by sketched input

This paper presents a sketch based mesh extrusion method, which is useful for intuitive, efficient geometric modeling of freeform polygonal objects. With our method, the user can extrude either a closed or open surface from the surface or the boundary of a given mesh by sketched input. Thus, compared to earlier methods, our method provides more flexibility for solving surface modeling problems....

Topology-Consistent Design for 3D Freeform Meshes with Harmonic Interpolation

One of the most exciting aspects of shape modeling is the development of new algorithms and methods to create unusual, interesting and aesthetically pleasing shapes. In this paper, we present an interactive modeling system for generating freeform surfaces using a 2D user interface. In this paper, we firstly interpret the given 2D curve to be the projection of the 3D curve that has the minimum c...

Sweep-based Approach to Three-Dimensional Shape Deformation

We present a sweep-based approach to modeling and deformation of three-dimensional objects. We approximate the deformable parts of an object using sweep surfaces. The vertices on the object boundary are bound to the sweep surfaces and then follow their deformation. For practical applications, we apply this approach to 3D human body modeling and deformation, and then extend it to the freeform de...
